Reporting to: MYP Coordinator, Head of Secondary Liaising with: Other language teachers The Mandarin Teacher creates meaningful, inclusive, and engaging learning experiences that support the linguistic, academic, social, and emotional development of learners within the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). The role promotes inquiry, intercultural understanding, international-mindedness, and student agency while developing learners' confidence and proficiency in Mandarin Chinese as a language for communication, expression, and cultural understanding. Practice, Learning & Planning Inquiry-Based Design: Design learning experiences aligned with the IB MYP Language and Literature curriculum, promoting inquiry, interpretation, and critical thinking. Inclusivity & Differentiation: Respond thoughtfully to the needs, interests, and varying proficiency levels of learners, collaborating with Learning Support specialists when required. Living Language: Encourage learners to explore Mandarin as a tool for meaning-making, storytelling, and cultural understanding, integrating both traditional and simplified Chinese. Digital Integration: Use digital tools and contemporary communication platforms - including Chinese digital media - where they enhance learning. Curriculum Documentation: Collaborate with colleagues on short/medium-term planning and maintain documentation on the school's official platform. 2. Assessment Formative & Summative: Use a range of formative and summative assessment approaches aligned with MYP requirements to support learning and reflection. Targeted Feedback: Provide meaningful feedback that supports learner progress in both spoken and written Mandarin. Reporting & Conferences: Maintain clear records of achievement and facilitate student-led conferences, supporting students to articulate their own progress and next goals. 3. Community Outreach & Family Support Admissions & Liaison: Act as an initial point of contact for prospective Chinese-speaking families, helping them understand the school's philosophy, programmes, and onboarding process. Cultural Bridge: Support communication between the school and Mandarin-speaking families, helping them navigate school systems and expectations. Community Building: Contribute to activities and events that celebrate Chinese culture and foster a sense of belonging within the wider school. 4. School Life & Professional Engagement School Culture: Contribute positively to the pastoral programme (including the role of Class Tutor), the ECA programme, and daily supervision duties. Collaboration: Maintain regular communication with the Head of Faculty, MYP Coordinator, and Pastoral teams. Professional Growth: Participate in school Professional Learning Communities and engage with IB professional development opportunities.
